Report on the Distribution of Humanitarian Aid in East Darfur – El Daein City, December 7, 2024
In light of the deteriorating humanitarian conditions faced by displaced populations due to the ongoing war in Sudan since April 15, 2023, the Darfur Victims Advocacy Organization, in collaboration with Save Al-Geneina Initiative and Hope and Haven for Refugees, has initiated a series of humanitarian operations starting this month. These efforts aim to deliver essential food aid to the most affected groups residing in Liqawa Camp, located north of El Daein City in East Darfur State.
Details of the Humanitarian Initiative:
This campaign targeted 220 families, totaling 1,116 individuals, by providing comprehensive food baskets that included the following:
• Premium wheat flour
• Soap
• Sugar
• Pasta
• Sorghum
Liqawa Camp, housing approximately 500 families (equivalent to 3,600 individuals), serves as a temporary shelter for displaced persons from areas such as Nyala, Zalingei, Khartoum, and Babanusa in West Kordofan State. The camp’s residents face dire humanitarian challenges, with a complete lack of basic necessities such as sanitation facilities and access to potable water, exacerbating the already critical situation.
Innovative Approaches to Overcome Challenges:
Despite the security challenges and scarcity of aid, the three organizations adopted more effective strategies to ensure aid delivery, rejecting the notion of attributing logistical failures to security concerns. Instead, they emphasized the exploration of alternative pathways to reach those in need. This initiative underscores the urgency of the humanitarian crisis and highlights the necessity of transcending traditional barriers to achieve tangible outcomes.
Impact of Aid and Testimonials from Beneficiaries:
The distribution event was attended by the camp leader, Sheikh Ibrahim, who expressed profound gratitude for these humanitarian efforts. He noted that this marks the first time aid has reached Liqawa Camp since the outbreak of the war. Sheikh Ibrahim described the initiative as a courageous step taken at a critical time, and he urged humanitarian organizations to intensify their efforts to address the escalating needs, particularly in anticipation of a harsh winter that will further aggravate the hardships faced by families.
Appeal to the Humanitarian and International Community:
The Darfur Victims Support Organization and its partners renew their call for international and local organizations to unite their efforts in addressing Sudan’s escalating humanitarian crisis. Conditions in camps like Liqawa represent an urgent plea to the humanitarian community to take immediate action to provide food and medical aid, ensure access to basic living conditions, and overcome any obstacles hindering the delivery of aid to those in dire need.
Commitment to Ongoing Support:
This initiative represents the beginning of a sustained effort to support displaced populations suffering in silence. The three organizations reaffirm their commitment to alleviating the suffering of the most vulnerable groups, pledging to stand with them until their aspirations for a dignified life are realized.
