Report on the Aerial Bombardment of Nyala, the Capital of South Darfur State, on February 3, 2025
Since the outbreak of armed conflict between the Sudanese Armed Forces and the Rapid Support Forces on April 15, 2023, Sudan has witnessed a significant escalation in human rights violations, particularly in Darfur, Kordofan, Al-Jazirah, and Khartoum. These violations have manifested in indiscriminate killings, forced displacement, and the destruction of vital infrastructure. In this context, on February 3, 2025, the Sudanese Armed Forces’ warplanes carried out a heavy aerial bombardment of Nyala, the capital of South Darfur State, resulting in the deaths of dozens of civilians and extensive destruction of public facilities and private property.
According to the interview to Darfur Victims support they said form one pm up to two pm , the warplanes conducted airstrikes on that day. The first targeted the vicinity of Nyala Airport and the northern and Algamhora and Yageen middcal center, killing 12 people and injuring several others. The second airstrike hit the Al-Masaneh neighborhood, .
These attacks are part of an ongoing escalation of violence in Darfur, where Nyala has been subjected to repeated aerial bombardments in recent days, leading to numerous civilian casualties. Reports indicate that the death toll over two days reached 39 killed and 20 injured.
These attacks constitute a flagrant violation of international humanitarian law, which strictly prohibits the targeting of civilians and civilian infrastructure during armed conflicts. Furthermore, the use of indiscriminate weapons, such as unguided aerial bombardments, is classified as a war crime under Article 8 of the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court.
The Darfur Victims Support Organization calls on the international community to take immediate action to protect civilians in Darfur and to hold those responsible for these crimes accountable to ensure justice and end the suffering of innocent civilians. The organization also urges the United Nations Security Council to impose a no-fly zone to safeguard civilians, demands justice for the victims and accountability for the perpetrators, and calls on all parties to the conflict to cease hostilities and adhere to international humanitarian law.
The continuation of these attacks poses a severe threat to civilian lives and exacerbates the already dire humanitarian crisis in Darfur. It is therefore imperative that the international community acts swiftly and effectively to stop these violations and safeguard human rights in Sudan.
