Urgent Humanitarian Appeal. Critical Situation in Kuruma Administrative Unit – Selik Camp, North Darfur

The Darfur Victims Suplort Organization urgently alerts the international community to an escalating humanitarian catastrophe unfolding in the Kuru Administrative Unit and Selik IDP Camp, located in North Darfur. This worsening crisis stems from a continuous wave of mass displacement from the city of El Fasher and its surrounding areas due to intensifying armed conflict and insecurity.

Since April 16, 2025, the Selik Camp began receiving displaced families, with an initial group of 40 families arriving and gathering at a central location inside the camp. Within days, large transport trucks began arriving with newly displaced persons from devastated villages such as Jarna, Donki Kashta, Al-Shajara, and others near El Fasher. By Sunday, April 21, the number of displaced households had surged to approximately 500 families, totaling an estimated 70,000 individuals, the vast majority of whom are women, children, and the elderly, now stranded in the open with no shelter, food, or basic services.

These families are currently surviving through extremely limited community-based efforts led by local youth initiatives who transport water and distribute minimal supplies funded solely by community donations. To date, no international humanitarian organization has intervened, despite the ongoing daily influx of 200 to 400 new families, which threatens to overwhelm any remaining local coping capacity.

The health situation is dire. Alarming cases of severe acute malnutrition have been reported among children under five. A fragile and under-resourced health response is in place, yet available capacity falls drastically short of meeting the needs. There is a critical lack of therapeutic food, clean water, medical care, and shelter, while the growing number of displaced people continues to rise unchecked.

This humanitarian emergency has now surpassed early warning thresholds. The displacement crisis in Selik Camp and the surrounding Kuru area is fast becoming a full-fledged humanitarian disaster, unfolding in silence and without the attention or response it desperately demands.

We issue this urgent call to action to:
• United Nations agencies
• International humanitarian organizations
• Donor governments and humanitarian partners

Immediate action is required to provide:
• Emergency shelter and tents
• Access to clean water and food supplies
• Mobile health services and nutritional support
• Logistics support to enhance local response efforts

We urge immediate and coordinated humanitarian intervention before it is too late. Thousands of lives are at risk, and time is running out.
