We launched a humanitarian appeal regarding the spread of cholera in Tawila locality, North Darfur state (Al-Fashir).
Tawila is witnessing an alarming outbreak of cholera, with over 470 confirmed cases in recent weeks. Around 350 patients have been treated, but new infections continue to rise daily amid an environment lacking the most basic health and hygiene necessities.
Thousands of displaced people who fled bloody violence in Al-Fashir and the camps of Zamzam and Abu Shouk are now living in tragic conditions—without access to clean drinking water or proper sanitation, putting them at high risk of contracting cholera.
A local volunteer in Tawila stated:
“The situation worsens every day. People are forced to defecate in the open due to a lack of toilets. Ponds and stagnant water haven’t yet been sprayed with insecticides. There’s a severe shortage of hygiene supplies. No organized awareness campaigns. Isolation centers lack IV fluids. We face a real danger.”
Médecins Sans Frontières (Doctors Without Borders), which operates the only functioning hospital in Tawila, reported the setup of a cholera treatment center with 100 beds. Within just ten days, it received over 125 cases per day, causing extreme overcrowding.
The organization has:
- Established 8 treatment units in high-infection zones.
- Constructed 1,200 latrines for around 120,000 people.
- Distributed 10,000 hygiene kits.
- Begun digging 3 wells to improve access to clean water.
Yet despite these efforts, MSF confirms the interventions fall short of minimum needs, especially with continued displacement from Al-Fashir and the start of the rainy season—posing the risk of turning Tawila into a catastrophic health hotspot.
We therefore issue an urgent humanitarian appeal to all international and regional organizations, UN agencies, and health and humanitarian institutions for immediate intervention to save lives in North Darfur.
We demand:
- Provision of IV fluids and medicines to treat cholera.
- Support for hospitals and mobile health centers.
- Broad insecticide spraying campaigns for stagnant water.
- Distribution of personal hygiene supplies.
- Construction of emergency latrines.
- Launch of public health awareness programs targeting affected communities.
Darfur cannot withstand another crisis. Cholera is not just a disease—it’s a direct threat to the lives of tens of thousands of displaced people. Delayed intervention means greater spread and a devastating health disaster. We call for urgent action—now, not tomorrow.
