August 19, 2025 – Kampala, Uganda
On Tuesday, the Darfur Victim Support Organization (DVSO) paid a celebratory visit to the offices of DefendDefenders, marking a significant milestone in the latter’s two-decade journey of protecting and empowering Human Rights Defenders (HRDs) across Africa. The occasion commemorated 20 years of unwavering support, with special recognition given to DefendDefenders’ contributions to Sudanese HRDs and civil society organizations.
DVSO presented certificates of appreciation to DefendDefenders acknowledging their deep and sustained partnership. Over the years, DefendDefenders has provided DVSO with vital technical assistance, capacity-building programs, and financial support, enabling the organization to expand its reach and impact in conflict-affected regions.
The celebration also highlighted DefendDefenders’ instrumental role in advocating for the renewal of the mandate of the UN Fact-Finding Mission (FFM) on Sudan, established in Geneva to investigate atrocities committed during the ongoing conflict. Their efforts through the African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights have further amplified the voices of victims and defenders alike.
DVSO extended heartfelt thanks to DefendDefenders’ founder, Mr. Hassan Shire, and his dedicated team, including Sudan Coordination lead Majid and his colleagues. Their commitment to justice and human dignity continues to inspire grassroots movements across the continent.
This event served not only as a tribute to past achievements but also as a reaffirmation of solidarity in the ongoing struggle for human rights and accountability in Sudan and beyond.
