Report on Aerial Bombardment in Nyala City, South Darfur State – January 1, 2025

On January 1, 2025, Sudanese Armed Forces warplanes conducted a series of airstrikes on civilian areas in Nyala, South Darfur State. The Darfur Victims support Organization interviewed eyewitnesses and relatives of the victims, who provided detailed accounts of these attacks and their devastating impact on civilians and property.
Details of the Bombardment
1. Tayba Neighborhood – North Nyala
At approximately 10:20 PM, the Tayba neighborhood was subjected to heavy aerial bombardment involving two consecutive airstrikes, resulting in the death of five members of a single family.
2. Karari Neighborhood
The warplanes targeted the technical school in the neighborhood with two airstrikes, causing significant destruction to a large portion of the educational facility.
3. Kashalango Neighborhood
Two airstrikes hit the entrance to the neighborhood. Although no human casualties were reported, the attacks caused severe environmental damage and negatively impacted livestock in the area.
4. Nyala Airport
The civilian airport was subjected to two airstrikes, despite the absence of any military activity at the site.
All the targeted locations were purely civilian areas with no military presence. These attacks have forcibly displaced residents of the city to nearby villages and caused widespread panic among women and children, forcing many families to sleep on the ground in fear of further airstrikes.
Bombardment of Al-Sikka Hadid Neighborhood – December 31, 2024
On December 31, 2024, at approximately 10:30 PM, Sudanese Armed Forces warplanes launched an airstrike on Al-Sikka Hadid neighborhood in eastern Nyala. The attack targeted the homes of Mr. Adam Haroun Hassan and Mr. Ibrahim Haroun Hassan. According to the testimony of a relative, the airstrikes occurred while residents were sleeping, causing the houses to collapse. Although no fatalities were reported, the affected families, along with approximately ten other families, fled the city for fear of repeated bombardments.
Humanitarian Impact:
• Forced Displacement: Many families have fled the city to rural areas.
• Widespread Panic: Women and children experienced extreme fear, forcing many to sleep on the ground.
• Unjustified Targeting: All bombed areas were entirely devoid of military presence, indicating a deliberate targeting of civilians.
Appeal and Recommendations:
1. Immediate Cessation of Hostilities:
The organization urges all parties to the conflict to cease hostilities immediately and adhere to the principles of international humanitarian law.
2. Accountability:
The organization holds General Abdel Fattah Al-Burhan and the Governor of South Darfur State fully responsible for these grave human rights violations.
3. Urgent International Action:
The organization calls on the UN Security Council and the UN Secretary-General’s representative to take decisive measures to protect civilians in Darfur.
4. Imposition of a No-Fly Zone:
The organization demands that the Security Council urgently issue a resolution to impose a no-fly zone over Sudan to prevent the use of warplanes in targeting civilians.
