The Darfur Victims Support Organization (DVSO) organized an extensive discussion session involving media institutions and human rights organizations in the Nsambya area of the Ugandan capital, Kampala. The session included approximately 16 representatives from newspapers, media platforms, and human rights organizations, aiming to strengthen integration and coordination between media and human rights work in light of the escalating conflict-related violations in Sudan.
The session was moderated by Dr. Abbas Al-Tijani. Participants emphasized the importance of building a unified, professional media discourse based on accurate and reliable information. This approach contributes to conveying the reality of violations more effectively to local and international public opinion and bolsters advocacy and pressure efforts to achieve justice for victims. They stressed that media is no longer merely a means of relaying news but has become a pivotal tool in documenting violations and defending human rights.
The discussion covered several key issues, including the necessity of issuing periodic joint statements between media outlets and human rights organizations to unify the narrative and enhance credibility. The importance of building sustainable partnerships to ensure an effective and rapid flow of information was also highlighted.
Furthermore, attendees discussed the field challenges facing journalists, including security risks, difficulty accessing information sources, and the lack of adequate protection. Practical proposals were put forward to enhance professional safety and provide the necessary support.
Participants also underscored the importance of developing investigative journalism tools as an effective means to uncover violations and combat impunity, especially given the complexities of the humanitarian scene in Sudan. There is an increasing need for evidence-based, accurate reports that support legal accountability efforts.
This session reflects a growing trend toward transforming media work into a genuine tool of influence regarding justice and human rights issues.
