Date: March 10, 2026
A massive fire broke out on the morning of Sunday, March 1, 2026, in the Kalma IDP Camp in South Darfur State. Eyewitnesses, along with the official spokesperson for the General Coordination for Displaced Persons and Refugees, Mr. Adam Regal, informed the organizations that the fire started at approximately 10:00 AM Sudan time and continued until 1:00 PM. The blaze targeted “Center 1” within the camp, which is one of the largest concentrations of internally displaced persons in South Darfur.
According to preliminary information, the fire destroyed more than one thousand homes, leading to the displacement of thousands of families who were already living in extremely fragile humanitarian conditions. The fire began in a single dwelling before spreading rapidly due to narrow corridors and the high density of shelters within the camp, causing severe damage to homes, stored crops, and personal belongings.
A displaced woman with special needs was injured during the fire and has been transported to Nyala Hospital in critical condition.
Losses also included the burning of large quantities of food crops and the total loss of basic property for the affected families. Although no fatalities have been recorded thus far, the humanitarian situation is described as catastrophic, as thousands of families are now without shelter or food.
Kalma Camp is one of the largest IDP camps in Darfur; it has hosted over 300,000 people since the outbreak of conflict in 2003, with numbers rising to over 500,000 displaced persons following the new wave of displacement in the region in 2023.
In light of this humanitarian disaster, the Darfur Victims Support Organization (DVSO) and the Hope and Haven Refugees Organization issue an urgent appeal to all local, regional, and international organizations for immediate intervention to:
Provide urgent shelter for the affected families.
