The Darfur Victims Support Organization welcomes the historic judgment issued by the International Criminal Court (ICC) on October 6, 2025, convicting Ali Abdelrahman (Kushayb) of war crimes and crimes against humanity committed in the Darfur region between August 2003 and April 2004.
This verdict marks a defining moment in the path of international justice, a symbolic milestone that restores confidence in the global system of accountability and reaffirms that serious crimes do not lapse with time, and that the hand of justice remains capable of reaching perpetrators—no matter how long it takes or how far they flee.
The organization affirms that this conviction sends a powerful message to all those who have committed atrocities against civilians—that impunity is no longer an option, and that justice, though delayed, is inevitable.
The organization further calls upon States Parties to the Rome Statute to uphold their legal and moral obligations by surrendering all fugitives from justice, foremost among them Omar Hassan Ahmad al-Bashir, Abdel Rahim Mohamed Hussein, and Ahmed Haroun—individuals against whom international arrest warrants remain outstanding, and who continue to embody the culture of impunity and obstruct the course of justice and redress.
The organization also urges the International Criminal Court and the United Nations Security Council to refer the entire Sudan situation to the ICC and to open a comprehensive investigation into the grave crimes committed since the outbreak of the war on April 15, 2023, particularly those that occurred in Khartoum, Kordofan, Sennar, Blue Nile, and other areas that witnessed systematic killings, ethnic cleansing, forced displacement, and sexual violence.
The trial of Kushayb stands as a hard-earned victory for the victims and their families, and a clear reminder that justice may be delayed, but it never dies. Those who have turned their weapons against innocent civilians will one day face the weight of their crimes before international justice, just as the former President of Yugoslavia ultimately fell into the hands of justice after futile attempts to disguise himself and escape accountability.
Finally, the Darfur Victims Support Organization reaffirms its unwavering commitment to pursuing justice and human dignity, and calls on the international community to translate this ruling into a renewed, decisive path toward ending impunity and ensuring that the tragedies endured by the Sudanese people for decades are never repeated.
