Tragic Fire in North Darfur Camp Leaves Child Dead, 1,500 Families Displaced

Darfur Victims Support Organization

February 11, 2026
We issue this urgent appeal during the tragic fire that broke out on the afternoon of February 9, 2026, in Dali Camp and the Hilla Neema site in Tawila locality, North Darfur State.
At exactly 3:00 p.m., flames swept through the fragile shelters made of straw and wood. With overcrowding and strong winds, the fire turned into a disaster within minutes.
Confirmed losses so far:

  • The death of a five-year-old child due to severe burns.
  • Complete destruction of approximately 250 shelters.
  • Around 1,500 displaced families affected.
  • Thousands of families lost all their belongings, including basic shelter materials, mattresses, blankets, household items, and the limited food supplies that represented everything they owned.
Many of these families had only recently arrived from El Fasher after years of siege and conflict, only to face a new tragedy that multiplies their suffering. This fire is the third of its kind in recent months, a dangerous indicator of the fragility of conditions inside the camps and the absence of safety and preventive measures.
    Urgent needs:
  • Provision of emergency shelter materials and non-food items (NFIs).
  • Immediate food support and activation of community kitchens.
  • Supply of three water tanks ready for rapid response to fire risks.
  • Implementation of preventive measures and strengthening of safety protocols inside the camps.
We affirm that local community volunteers are ready to respond, but their capacities are limited and do not match the scale of the disaster. We appeal to humanitarian organizations, UN agencies, donors, and all people of conscience to act immediately to provide support before the situation worsens further.
