The Dera Jebel Marra district of Central Darfur State, Zalingei, is experiencing a catastrophic and unprecedented health crisis due to the rapid spread of monkeypox during May 2026. June 2026: The current situation exceeds the capacity of the modest local medical facilities, requiring urgent relief and medical intervention to limit the spread of the epidemic and save the lives of residents and displaced persons in the region.
Current epidemiological indicators: The two organizations conducted interviews with medical staff and volunteers who reported that the number of confirmed cases has reached approximately 300, both laboratory-confirmed and clinically confirmed, to date.
Rate of spread: A continuous and escalating increase in the number of daily infections has been recorded.
Overall situation: The situation is rated as “very bad” with a high risk of wider transmission within shelters and population centers.
The two organizations are launching an urgent humanitarian appeal to all local, regional, and international organizations to intervene immediately and provide them with assistance.
